The Press Gallery: Inside Alberta politics

Mar 11, 2016

Alberta's New Democrat government launched its spring session with a new speech from the throne this week that had a heavy focus on energy, the economy and the need to spur job creation across the province. And as the ceremony unfolded inside the legislature, the long-awaited 'kudatah' anti-NDP rally happened outside. The government found itself in the middle of a chaotic first vote as the New Democrats found themselves nearly outnumbered by opposition members as the legislature voted for a new deputy chair of committees. The government got a do-over and house leader Brian Mason eventually apologized for the confusion. Plus, Premier Rachel Notley found herself under fire this week after it was revealed her government poached a former top negotiator for the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees to be her new chief adviser on labour negotiations. The opposition says it's a blatant conflict of interest but the province says they've simply hired the best person for the job. Join panellists Paula Simons and Sarah O'Donnell as they dissect these issues and more with host Mariam Ibrahim. As usual, the episode wraps up with Good Stuff from the Gallery.
